Quagmire

The exhibition Quagmire, showcases works by Filipino artist Carlo Gabuco.  Recognized for his ability to ponder vicarious social details and present them onto canvas as haunting images of an unsympathetic reality, Gabuco draws us into a world of certain uncomfortable truths.

For his first solo exhibit at Artesan, the artist abandons the photo-journalistic treatment of his former paintings, this time relying on invisible associations and juxtapositions. Each work—with its matrix of dual images—becomes pregnant with commentaries.  Instead of drawing us into a crisis of meaning, the paintings awakens us with what the artist refers to as the “quagmires all over our system, constantly wearing us down, keeping us from moving forward, creating the muddy pathway for us: personally, mentally, spiritually - in our families, and in our society.”
