About the event
I met Lyra some two years, when we arranged her residency at the LASALLE College of The Arts Tropical Lab workshop, along with fellow artist Janice Young. I thoroughly enjoyed these young ladies’ company throughout their two week stay in Singapore. The vibes were good, and Lyra’s sense of humour was always particularly dry, witty with a hint of outrageous sarcasm. From then on, whenever I’m in Manila, we try to have a meal, coffee - a chance to sit and laugh and be silly.
Last year, Lyra spent more than six months in New York for another residency stint. When I met her again later in the year, I noticed a gleam of change in my friend. She seemed quieter, a wee bit more serious - perhaps I sensed a kind of maturity in her way.
I think of this exhibition as a defining moment for Lyra, and I am confident that that gleam has turned into a twinkle, then into a thousand sparkles. Here, she has created a beautiful array of paintings layered with soft femininity, intertwined with marks of wistful serendipity; the passion is tender and innate. Lyra’s exhibition Indelible, I believe - is very much a brilliant spark from her experiences in the past year, and the enduring mark it has made on her - and on her art.
